چکیده

A closed-form expression for shear band spacing in strain-hardening, strain-rate-hardening and thermally softening thermoviscoplastic materials is derived by studying the stability of a homogeneous solution of equations governing its simple shearing deformations. The wavelength of the perturbation that maximizes its initial growth rate is assumed to determine the shear band spacing, Ls: The dependence of Ls upon various material parameters and the nominal strain rate, _ e; is delineated. When written as Ls 1⁄4 A1k1 or A2_ e w 2 where A1 and A2 are parameters and k is the thermal conductivity, it is found that w2 ’ 0:787 and w 1 depends upon the strain-rate hardening exponent m; w 1 ’ 0:5 for m ’ 10 6 and n ’ 0:011; decreases rapidly to 0:21 for m ’ 10 4 and n ’ 0:011; and then increases slowly to 0:25 for m ’ 0:05 and n ’ 0:011: However, for m 1⁄4 0 and na0; w 1 1⁄4 1: r 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Instability strain and shear band spacing in simple tensile/ compressive deformations of thermoviscoplastic materials

We analyze the stability of homogeneous simple tensile/compressive deformations of an isotropic heat-conducting thermoviscoplastic bar by studying the growth of infinitesimal perturbations superimposed upon a homogeneous deformation. The smallest axial strain at which the superimposed perturbation has a positive initial growth rate is called the instability strain. Two criteria are used to dete...

Shear band spacing in gradient-dependent thermoviscoplastic materials

We study thermomechanical deformations of a viscoplastic body deformed in simple shear. The strain gradients are taken as independent kinematic variables and the corresponding higher order stresses are included in the balance laws, and the equation for the yield surface. Three different functional relationships, the power law, and those proposed by Wright and Batra, and Johnson and Cook are use...

Microstructural eects on shear instability and shear band spacing

A constitutive relation that accounts for the thermally activated dislocation motion and microstructure interaction is used to study the stability of a homogeneous solution of equations governing the simple shearing deformations of a thermoviscoplastic body. An instability criterion and an upper bound for the growth rate of the in®nitesimal deformations superimposed on the homogeneous solution ...

Effect of viscoplastic relations on the instability strain, shear band initiation strain, the strain corresponding to the minimum shear band spacing, and the band width in a thermoviscoplastic material

We study thermomechanical deformations of a steel block deformed in simple shear and model the thermoviscoplastic response of the material by four different relations. We use the perturbation method to analyze the stability of a homogeneous solution of the governing equations. The smallest value of the average strain for which the perturbed homogeneous solution becomes unstable is called the cr...

THE INTEFtACTION AMONG ADIABATIC SHEAR BANDS IN SIMPLE AND DIPOLAR MATERIALS

The effect of average strain-rate on the interaction among shear bands in nonpolar and dipolar thermoviscoplastic materials has been investigated. The uniform temperature and stress fields in a block undergoing simple shearing deformations are perturbed when the body just starts deforming plastically and the governing nonlinear coupled partial differential equations are solved numerically. The ...
